ThereвЂ™s a fun site on monsters and in a particular feature on Curse, itвЂ™s written that вЂњ more effective in this film, although unfortunately stumbled upon in these last Universal mummy films, is the potential for female horror through the character of Ananka.вЂќ Ananka, in a very memorable scene, emerges from the ground in a very eerie way.

Babcock, along with the director Leslie Goodwins, contribute two things to the movie that may have had a greater impact on the legacy of The Mummy than they may have realized. The story isnвЂ™t really muddled itвЂ™s so very simplistic that not much really could be made of the actual plot. The MummyвЂ™s CurseВ takes place in Louisiana and, once again, has something to do with Kharis, Ananka, tana leaves, and the high priests of Arkam. The MummyвЂ™s CurseВ is straight-forward and presents Kharis ( Lon Chaney Jr) as the bandaged, lumbering stereotypical mummy, complete with his trademark death grip. But itвЂ™s an interesting aspect to the film, regardless. While itвЂ™s a plot point that is never directly brought up, itвЂ™s very plausible that the filmmakers never even gave thought to the fact that CurseВ took place in 1995. Pretty sci-fi for a movie made during the early 40вЂ™s. Taking place 25 years after Ghost, for those that have paid attention to the timeline of these movies, The MummyвЂ™s CurseВ is actually supposed to take place in the year 1995. ItвЂ™s purely a monster movie and borderline science-fiction in the most subtle of ways. The MummyвЂ™s CurseВ isnвЂ™t a sweeping work of art, not is it really even вЂњepicвЂќ in regards to the adventurous nature of The MummyвЂ™s Hand.

Over the past few months IвЂ™ve watched all of UniversalвЂ™s The MummyВ films В the subsequent installments following the Karl Freund and Boris Karloff classic came pretty close in tone to what Universal did with 1999вЂ™s The Mummyand sequels. (Partially due to my crush on Ramsay Ames!) The truth is, there isnвЂ™t a whole lot written on The MummyвЂ™s Curse and regardless of whether or not audiences enjoyed this film or were disappointed by it, itвЂ™s rather a shame that CurseВ is forgotten most of the time. IвЂ™d even say it has moments that work more than 1944вЂ™s The MummyвЂ™s Ghost, but I actually very much enjoyed that one. The MummyвЂ™s CurseВ is not a very good movie, but then by MummyВ standards, itвЂ™s a whole lot better than 1942вЂ™s The MummyвЂ™s Tomb. Sure, вЂњHey You (Yoo Hoo)вЂќ is a catchy opening, but itвЂ™s not because IвЂ™m secretly a big Ann Codee fan, itвЂ™s because IвЂ™ve tried to watch this film from start to finish more times than IвЂ™d like to confess. IвЂ™ve seen The MummyвЂ™s CurseВ countless times and IвЂ™ve watched the musical opening at least three or more times in the last month. This would be yet another far cry away from the 1932 classic and would mark Lon Chaney JrвЂ™s final performance as Kharis. Summing up: Easy enough to watch but you have to be patient to get past the slow start.1944 saw Universal release the last installment in their MummyВ franchise with вЂњThe MummyвЂ™s CurseвЂќ. I missed hearing James Bernard's background music, usually a strong point in any Hammer horror film. DICKIE OWEN makes a formidable mummy with the help of some fine make-up effects but it is really the convincing performances of the three principals that makes the story credible. High among his priorities is the fast-talking, rather obnoxious American showman (FRED CLARK) who is anxious to make a profit on exhibiting the mummy in show biz style. Again, the mummy has come to life to kill the people who've exploited him. The tale is not exactly original in concept. The story requires a lot of exposition at the start which means a lot of talky and static scenes before the real suspense starts. The less you know about the Terence Morgan character (Adam), the more you'll enjoy the plot.

This may not be the best of The Mummy films from Hammer, but it is handsomely filmed and well acted by a fine British cast-especially TERENCE MORGAN, RONALD HOWARD and YVONNE ROLAND as the charming feminine lead.
